Short answer: Many root canals can be completed in a single appointment of about 45 to 90 minutes. Whether yours can depends on the tooth and on how much infection is present.

What makes one visit possible

Root canal treatment used to mean three or four sittings. Modern rotary instruments clean the canals faster and more precisely, electronic devices measure canal length accurately, and digital X-rays show results in seconds. Together they let a trained endodontist finish the whole procedure in one sitting.

The benefits

  • One round of anaesthesia instead of several
  • Less time away from work or school
  • No temporary filling to worry about between visits
  • The tooth is sealed the same day, so bacteria have no chance to get back in

Who is a good candidate

Single-visit treatment suits you well if:

  • The tooth is painful but there is no large swelling
  • The roots have a straightforward shape
  • You can keep your mouth open comfortably for the appointment

When two visits are the safer choice

  • There is a large abscess or swelling with pus
  • The tooth has had a root canal before and needs re-treatment
  • The canals are very curved, narrow or blocked
  • The infection needs medicine placed inside the tooth for some days first

In these cases a second visit is not a setback. It gives the tooth the best chance of healing.

What happens on the day

  1. Examination and a digital X-ray
  2. Local anaesthesia
  3. Cleaning, shaping and disinfecting the canals
  4. Filling and sealing the canals
  5. A filling to close the tooth

Do I still need a crown?

Usually, yes. A root-canal-treated back tooth is more brittle than a healthy one. A crown protects it from cracking and is normally fitted a few days later.

Aftercare

Wait until the numbness wears off before eating. Chew on the other side for a few days. Brush and floss as usual. Mild tenderness is normal and settles quickly.
