Short answer: A root canal done with modern local anaesthesia is painless for most patients. The toothache that brings you to the clinic is usually far worse than the treatment that ends it.

Why people fear root canals

Most of the fear comes from stories told years ago, when techniques and anaesthetics were different. Today the tooth is fully numbed before we begin. You feel pressure and vibration, but not pain.

What a root canal actually is

Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which holds nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can infect it. An infected pulp cannot heal on its own. In a root canal we:

  1. Numb the tooth and the area around it.
  2. Make a small opening and remove the infected pulp.
  3. Clean and shape the canals inside the roots.
  4. Fill and seal the canals.
  5. Restore the tooth, usually with a crown.

The tooth stays in your mouth and keeps working like any other tooth.

Signs you may need one

  • Toothache that is severe, throbbing, or wakes you at night
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the food or drink is gone
  • Pain when biting or chewing
  • Swelling of the gum or a small pimple on the gum near the tooth
  • A tooth that has turned darker

Sometimes an infected tooth gives no pain at all and is found on an X-ray. That is one reason regular check-ups matter.

What to expect afterwards

Mild soreness for two or three days is normal, especially when biting. Simple pain relief prescribed by your dentist is usually enough. Avoid chewing hard food on that side until the final crown is in place.

Call the clinic if you have swelling, strong pain after a few days, or if the temporary filling comes out.

Is it better to just remove the tooth?

Saving your natural tooth is almost always the better choice. A missing tooth lets neighbouring teeth drift, makes chewing harder, and usually needs a bridge or implant later, which costs more than the root canal would have.
