Short answer: A crown is a cap that covers and protects a weak tooth. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by joining an artificial tooth to crowns on the teeth beside the gap.

When a crown is needed

  • After root canal treatment, especially on back teeth
  • A tooth with a very large filling
  • A cracked or broken tooth
  • A badly worn tooth
  • To improve the shape or colour of a tooth

Why a crown after a root canal?

A tooth that needed a root canal has usually lost a lot of structure to decay. It is more brittle and can crack under chewing forces. A crown holds it together and lets you chew normally. Leaving it uncrowned is the most common reason a root-canal-treated tooth is lost.

Types of crowns

  • Metal-ceramic: strong, with a tooth-coloured outer layer
  • Zirconia: very strong and tooth-coloured, with no metal
  • All-ceramic: the most natural look, often chosen for front teeth

Your dentist will suggest a type based on the position of the tooth, your bite and your budget.

How it is done

  1. The tooth is shaped under local anaesthesia.
  2. An impression or digital scan is taken.
  3. A temporary crown protects the tooth.
  4. The final crown is checked for fit, bite and colour, and cemented, usually within a week.

What a bridge is

When a tooth is missing, the teeth on either side can be crowned and used to support an artificial tooth between them. A bridge is fixed in place; you do not remove it.

Why replace a missing tooth?

A gap lets neighbouring teeth tilt and the opposite tooth over-grow. This changes your bite, traps food and makes cleaning harder.

Looking after crowns and bridges

  • Brush twice a day, paying attention to the gum line
  • Clean under a bridge with a floss threader or interdental brush
  • Avoid biting very hard things such as ice or nut shells
  • Have them checked every six months

With good care, crowns and bridges last many years.
