Short answer: Digital Smile Designing (DSD) uses photographs and digital scans to plan a new smile and show it to you before any treatment begins. Veneers are one of the treatments often used to achieve it.
What DSD is
Every face is different. A smile that suits one person may look wrong on another. In DSD we study your face, lips, gums and teeth together and design tooth shapes and proportions that fit you.
The steps
- Conversation. You tell us what you like and dislike about your smile.
- Photographs and scans of your face and teeth.
- Digital design of the proposed smile.
- Preview. You see the design on screen, and often as a trial placed over your own teeth.
- Your approval. We adjust until you are happy.
- Treatment, following the approved plan.
Nothing is done to your teeth until you have seen and approved the result.
What can be corrected
- Gaps between teeth
- Chipped, worn or uneven teeth
- Teeth that are discoloured and do not respond to whitening
- Slightly crooked teeth
- A gummy or uneven smile line
What veneers are
A veneer is a thin shell, usually porcelain, bonded to the front of a tooth. It changes the colour, shape and size of the tooth while looking natural.
Veneer or crown?
A veneer covers the front surface and needs very little tooth preparation. A crown covers the whole tooth and is chosen when a tooth is badly broken, heavily filled or root canal treated.
Other options
Not every smile needs veneers. Depending on the case, whitening, tooth-coloured bonding, braces or aligners may give the result with less treatment. A good smile design considers all of them.

- Brush and floss as usual
- Do not bite nails, pens or ice
- Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
- Come for regular check-ups
