Short answer: Losing teeth is not a normal part of ageing. With daily care and regular check-ups, most people can keep their natural teeth for life.

What changes with age

  • Dry mouth. Many common medicines, including those for blood pressure and diabetes, reduce saliva. Less saliva means a higher risk of decay.
  • Gum recession. Roots become exposed and can decay or feel sensitive.
  • Worn teeth from decades of chewing.
  • Older fillings and crowns that may need replacing.
  • Less grip strength, which makes brushing harder.

Common concerns and what helps

Dry mouth: Sip water often, chew sugar-free gum, avoid tobacco and alcohol-based mouthwash, and ask us about saliva substitutes.

Root decay: Use fluoride toothpaste and ask about professional fluoride application.

Gum disease: Have your teeth cleaned regularly. Gum health matters even more if you have diabetes.

Missing teeth: Replace them. Options include bridges, partial dentures and complete dentures. Being able to chew properly supports good nutrition.

If you wear dentures

  • Remove and clean them every day with a denture brush
  • Take them out at night to rest your gums
  • Keep them in water when not in use
  • Never use hot water, which can warp them
  • See your dentist if they become loose or cause sore spots; do not try to adjust them at home

Easier daily care

  • An electric toothbrush or a brush with a thick handle is easier to hold
  • Interdental brushes are often simpler than floss
  • Brush twice a day and clean the tongue

Mouth checks matter

At each visit we also check the cheeks, tongue and throat for any sore, patch or lump. See a dentist promptly for any mouth sore that does not heal in two weeks, especially if you have ever used tobacco.

Tell your dentist

Bring a list of your medicines and tell us about heart conditions, diabetes, blood thinners or joint replacements. It helps us plan your care safely.

For family members

If an elderly parent needs help, a gentle reminder to brush, help with cleaning dentures and a visit every six months make a real difference.
