Short answer: Bring your child for a first dental visit by their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing.

Why so early?

Milk teeth matter. They help your child chew, speak clearly and smile with confidence, and they hold space for the permanent teeth. Decay in milk teeth can cause pain and infection and can affect the permanent teeth growing beneath.

An early visit is short and gentle. It lets us spot problems while they are small and helps your child see the clinic as a friendly place.

What happens at the first visit

  • A look at the teeth, gums and jaw, often with the child sitting on your lap
  • A check of how the teeth are coming in
  • Advice on brushing, feeding and habits such as thumb sucking
  • Answers to your questions

How to prepare your child

  • Choose a time when your child is rested, not close to nap time
  • Talk about the visit in simple, positive words
  • Avoid words like “pain”, “injection” or “it will not hurt”
  • Read a picture book or play “dentist” at home
  • Stay calm yourself; children pick up on your mood

Caring for milk teeth at home

  • Before teeth appear, wipe the gums with a clean, damp cloth
  • From the first tooth, brush twice daily with a soft baby brush
  • Use a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice up to age three, and a pea-sized amount after that
  • Help with brushing until about age seven
  • Do not put your child to sleep with a bottle of milk or juice

Preventing cavities

  • Keep sweets, biscuits and packaged juices for mealtimes, not between meals
  • Offer water after milk and snacks
  • Ask us about fluoride application and sealants, which protect teeth from decay

How often after that?

Every six months, unless your dentist advises otherwise.
