Short answer: Gums that bleed are usually inflamed because of plaque. In the early stage this is fully reversible with a professional cleaning and better brushing.

Why gums bleed

Healthy gums are pink, firm and do not bleed. When plaque sits along the gum line, the gums react by becoming red, swollen and tender. This early stage is called gingivitis.

If it is ignored, the infection can move deeper and damage the bone that holds the teeth. This is periodontitis, and it is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Other things that add to the problem

  • Tobacco in any form, smoked or chewed
  • Diabetes that is not well controlled
  • Hormonal changes, including pregnancy
  • Some medicines
  • Brushing too hard with a hard brush
  • Crowded teeth that are difficult to clean

What you can do at home

  1. Do not stop brushing the area that bleeds. Clean it gently and thoroughly; it needs it most.
  2. Use a soft brush, angled towards the gum line, with small circular strokes for two minutes, twice a day.
  3. Clean between your teeth once a day with floss or an interdental brush.
  4. Rinse with warm salt water for a few days.
  5. Cut down on tobacco and sugary snacks.

If bleeding continues for more than a week, see a dentist.

How we treat it

  • Scaling and polishing removes plaque and tartar above the gum line.
  • Deep cleaning (root planing) cleans below the gum line when pockets have formed.
  • Gum procedures may be needed in advanced cases.
  • We also show you the brushing technique that suits your teeth.

See a dentist soon if you notice

  • Gums pulling away from the teeth
  • Teeth that look longer or feel loose
  • Pus between teeth and gums
  • Constant bad breath or a bad taste

Good to know

Gum disease is often painless until it is advanced. A check-up every six months catches it while it is still easy to treat.
