## What happens, step by step

2. **X-ray.** An X-ray shows whether the bone around the teeth is affected.
3. **Deep cleaning.** Under local anaesthesia, plaque and tartar are removed below the gum line and the roots are smoothed so gums can reattach.
4. **Medicines if needed.** An antiseptic mouthwash or medicines may be prescribed.
5. **Review.** We check how the gums have healed and plan regular cleanings.
