# Does Scaling Weaken Your Teeth? 6 Myths About Teeth Cleaning

By Dr. Sneha, BDS, MDS (Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics), The Dental Corner, Keshav Puram, New Delhi. Published 2026-11-07.

**Short answer:** No. Scaling removes hardened deposits that brushing cannot. It does not wear away enamel or loosen healthy teeth.

## What scaling is

Plaque is the soft, sticky film that forms on teeth every day. When it is not removed, it hardens into tartar (also called calculus). Tartar cannot be brushed off at home. During scaling we remove it with an ultrasonic instrument and then polish the teeth.

## Myth 1: Scaling makes teeth loose

Tartar can act like cement holding a weak tooth in place. When it is removed, a tooth that was already loose from gum disease may feel more mobile for a while. The scaling did not cause this; the gum disease did. Cleaning is the first step in making the gums firm again.

## Myth 2: Scaling creates gaps between teeth

The gaps were always there, filled with tartar. Once the gums heal and tighten, the spaces often look smaller.

## Myth 3: Scaling removes enamel

The scaler tip vibrates to break tartar. It does not cut tooth structure. Enamel is the hardest substance in the body.

## Myth 4: Teeth become sensitive forever

Some sensitivity to cold for a few days is common, because surfaces that were covered are now exposed. It settles on its own. A desensitising toothpaste helps.

## Myth 5: If I brush well, I do not need it

Even careful brushers miss areas, especially behind the lower front teeth and around the back molars. Almost everyone builds some tartar.

## Myth 6: Once you start, you have to keep doing it

You need regular cleaning because plaque forms every day, not because of the last cleaning. It is the same reason you bathe again tomorrow.

## How often?

For most people, once every six months. If you have gum disease, diabetes, braces, or you smoke or chew tobacco, your dentist may advise every three to four months.

## Signs you are due

- Bleeding when you brush
- Bad breath that does not go away
- Yellow or brown deposits near the gum line
- Gums that look red or swollen
