# Digital Smile Designing and Veneers: See Your New Smile First

**Short answer:** Digital Smile Designing (DSD) uses photographs and digital scans to plan a new smile and show it to you before any treatment begins. Veneers are one of the treatments often used to achieve it.

## What DSD is

Every face is different. A smile that suits one person may look wrong on another. In DSD we study your face, lips, gums and teeth together and design tooth shapes and proportions that fit you.

## The steps

1. **Conversation.** You tell us what you like and dislike about your smile.
2. **Photographs and scans** of your face and teeth.
3. **Digital design** of the proposed smile.
4. **Preview.** You see the design on screen, and often as a trial placed over your own teeth.
5. **Your approval.** We adjust until you are happy.
6. **Treatment,** following the approved plan.

Nothing is done to your teeth until you have seen and approved the result.

## What can be corrected

- Gaps between teeth
- Chipped, worn or uneven teeth
- Teeth that are discoloured and do not respond to whitening
- Slightly crooked teeth
- A gummy or uneven smile line

## What veneers are

A veneer is a thin shell, usually porcelain, bonded to the front of a tooth. It changes the colour, shape and size of the tooth while looking natural.

## Veneer or crown?

A veneer covers the front surface and needs very little tooth preparation. A crown covers the whole tooth and is chosen when a tooth is badly broken, heavily filled or root canal treated.

## Other options

Not every smile needs veneers. Depending on the case, whitening, tooth-coloured bonding, braces or aligners may give the result with less treatment. A good smile design considers all of them.

## Looking after veneers

- Brush and floss as usual
- Do not bite nails, pens or ice
- Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
- Come for regular check-ups
